Soap Box: CGS Video Explosion

Submitted by: Kyle Yangrave

“Video killed the radio star, video killed the radio star…” Anyone remember that song? Basically it was around the time MTV took over the airwaves when we were young kids, and it declared the arrival of video in the music industry. Of course, since that time MTV has given up on rock videos and turned into “reality show central” but I digress.

For many years, the best eSports had to offer was articles on sites like compLexityClan (yes, Clan, remember that old one?), Gotfrag and AmpedNews. CS demos were the rage of the day, but half the noobs couldn’t figure out how to watch them. Most games had little to no spectator mode, so all we could do was check the scores but not actually see the games. But where are we now?

Where we are now is the age of video. Slowly but surely, video coverage has replaced the written mode of communication. You probably remember “compLexity: Redemption” but did you have any idea that at the time that The Syndicate would spark a video revolution? Mr. Lake must have had some vision or a crystal ball, because video took over eSports like Oprah overtakes a buffet in Vegas. Soon there was GotfragTV and several TV wanna-be imitators. compLexity followed up with compLexiTV (nice catchy name btw) and even the biased SK-Gaming site finally found a camcorder. “Video killed the eSport writer star…”

Now video is everywhere, and there are all kinds. compLexity did coLTV last summer and followed up with live Ustream projects this year. As I write this, GotfragTV is broadcasting live from Moscow. MOSCOW. However, the point of this article is to applaud the efforts of another organization: CGS.

CGS started out with websites that looked like a 9th grader created them to pass his coding final the night before the exam. However, over time CGS has added many features us fans love to see, and most recently the league added VIDEO.

I’ll be honest. I was so-so on this whole CGS project, but the video coverage now has me locked in. Every night I get new videos with DJWheat breaking down the action. No other league in history has produced so much content. The live CS:S streams actually have me watching CS:S, which I swore never to do. CGS is revolutionizing the way online video content is done on the league level, and I LIKE IT. I don’t own DOA4, so I can’t watch PL or Belle play, but I’ll be damned if CGS doesn’t knock those videos out. Of course, the coL Staff guys always put the best ones right on this site so I don’t even have to search around.

Video is the way of the future, and in my small opinion, CGS is now leading the way. They haven’t done a lot of on-sight GotfragTV coverage, but I can only imagine with the acquisition of DJWheat it’s coming very soon. My hat is off to you, CGS. Keep the videos coming.

Oh, and I'm sure you're SICK of reading... so here's some video! :)

cool

I agree that the videos might have killed some of the articles, but it's still much easier to write something than to make a video of it and upload it (imo) but in the future we probably see a lot more videos on different sites

Nothing like a good video to see the action. Text just doesn't do it for me.

Completely disagree. Videos are more heavily watched because they cover the big events and are what? Once a month? More people read articles than comment...

Still like the videos though...

I disagree with this 110%. A good article takes just as much time to write, if not more than a good video takes to make.

In a video the software and what's being seen on the screen does a vast majority of the work. Yes, there's a good deal of creativity that has to go into a solid video, but compared to an article... come on. An article is 100% on the author to make it interesting.

Boring articles can be written about interesting topics, just like interesting articles can be written about boring topics.
