Random Acts of Kindness - 2008

Posted by: jlake02

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS - 2008

We would like to share with you a new compLexity program that excites me just as much as being GM. In 2008, we're running a program called Random Acts of Kindness (RAK).

As I get older, I continually have a different view of life and what's important. Over the past few months, I have been witness to some things that have planted the RAK concept in my brain. In 2008, compLexity is going to have RAK as our motto and mission statement, and we urge the coL Community to participate with us.

The basic concept is simple. Randomly do nice things for people! These people can be people you know or don't know. You can do the deeds in person, or do them anonymously. Here are some examples:

- A person I know purchased a $150 restaurant gift card and anonymously placed it in his pastor's mailbox
- A person I know anonymously bought a single mother a Wii for Christmas so her daughter would have a gift under the tree
- A person I know dropped 25 cents into a meter so a random car wouldn't get a parking ticket
- Offer to walk the dog of an elderly person when it's cold out
- Help a person in crutches carry their bags out of the grocery store
- Give a friend your old headset or mousepad if he can't afford one
- Spend time helping a classmate who's struggling in a class you're good at
- Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity or a food shelter
- Buy a hamburger for a homeless person

These are just a few examples of millions of different things you can do in the RAK program.

The point is this:

Everyone in the world is so worried about ME, MYSELF AND I, that we often miss the amazing opportunity to help others around us. Random Acts of Kindness not only help people in need, they spread joy and bring smiles to your life as well. People can label our 2008 mission as corny, stupid and utopian, but we'll push forward anyway. This summer while compLexity is in Los Angeles, we will be giving back to the community through our RAK program. We'll be doing charity work, stopping by nursing homes and helping those in need that least expect it. compLexity has always been a leader in eSports charity work, holding funding drives for such events as Katrina and the tsunami. This is the next step in our charitable efforts. Gamers can make a difference in the world. Why settle for the bad reputation they've given us when we can be out there helping people every day of the year? Take a stand. Spread kindness in your life.

Will you join us for RAK 2008? Tag [RAK] on IRC and join us today!

We have a new forum topic dedicated to this mission. In this thread, we encourage you to share stories of your Random Acts of Kindness. This is not bragging- it's sharing your true stories to motivate and inspire others to do the same. We ask the coL Community to rally behind this mission in 2008. Go out and do nice things for people all year long. We promise you'll be very glad you did. In addition, I’m going to randomly choose stories and send gifts from compLexity. Spread kindness in 2008. The coL Community can make a difference.

Gave a couple friends some Icemat Siberias because they were just getting into CS and had some bad hardware, helping them upgrade 1 part at a time.

My girlfriends family (her mom and her) are quite short on money lately. They are relying on her moms boyfriend for income and he is literally a bastard. He is mentally abusive to them and it's taking its toll. I can't see my girlfriend like that and I am making the effort to have her mom and her move in with me and my family until they can get back on their feet. I just want her to live a good life.

Next week there is midterms for my highschool.... this past weekend i held a little study party for kids that i knew were struggling. I paid for a bunch of food that we all ate while i helped them in the different areas they needed help with.... i also took the time to make them a little helper sheet to give them little pointers to helping with their calculus, physics or whatever it was.

Also sent a pair of siberias and a qck+ to a teammate in need that lives a few states away. Felt great when i heard how appreciative he was to have received them.

when I was a junior, i used to take the train to highschool, and you know how everyone is practically late for the train...alot. so im standing by the door and see this lady running up to the train. so the door started to close and i rested my elbow at the end on the door, and the other end that was closing hit my hand (think of putting ur arm straight and bending it. not down, but sideways). the woman ran up in and thanked me, then we started talking about her son, Jerry and his last named began with Sa? i forget. but this is the reason why i've been getting some recent military intrests and was thinking about joining the army at the end of high school. its not definate..just a thought. so i got something out of helping the old lady that day, a pain in my elbow and hand (lol) and maybe helpin the country.

...this is probably about the nicest thing i can think of so far.

These are really really great guys!

Let's move forward this year, and make a thread with 100's of posts of RAK's the coL Community does.

The team will be doing our share of public stuff, and we'll have full coverage of course.

This Christmas, I took money out of my bank account to upgrade my friends computer which was pretty out-of-date. I also gave him my old MX518 and SteelSeries mousepad.

Not sure if this counts, but at school I volunteer to help the special education program and I'll be a TA next semester for the class.

RANDOM is right, I'm giving my friend my old PSU, 2GB RAM, and a 6800XT because he needs a whole new PC and I hate the feeling of having to save up for an entire rig so I'm gonna give him those backup parts I had so he can just focus on getting a mobo/case.

I practically moved across my church floor to help open a door for an elderly man in a wheelchair. Poor old people =[.

I'm always the gentleman who opens the doors for the ladies. Or for anyone for that sake.

When I drove my cab here in Richmond, I would make an effort to pick up stranded people and take them where they needed to go free of charge. I can't put a monetary value on that because I didn't run my meter.

I've also helped stop a friend from killing herself by driving over to her house unexpectedly and talking to her.

When I was in high school, I emancipated myself due to an abusive family situation. I stayed on the streets and finally found a place to live through my church. All I had to do was help watch a child who had cerebral palsy and some form of cancer. Even after I had to move out due to his parents needing the space to set up his therapy equipment, I continued to help take care of him and his little brother, free of course.

There are a lot of little things we all can do to make things better for everyone, as long as we keep open minds and hearts.

I found 100$ in a cash depoistor with no one around it, while shopping in costco instead of quickly pocketing the money i stood beside the machine pretending the money was mine and waited for the person to come back and clam the money ( she forgot to pick it up and went to the bathroom)

That's really inspiring, I help a lot of people at my school with advice. A girl who transferred out of my school, was in a depression and was close to suicide. I called around 20 of my friends to find her number, which I eventually got. When I called her, I stayed on the phone with her for an hour and talked her down. She was glad that I cared so much even though we were not very close as friends.

The other day it was just me and this lady at the ATM, and for some reason she withdrew £200. But only took her card out, and just walked off. I could of easily taken the £200 (need a new rig), So i had to run down the street and find her. But i was like " errr are you not gonna take you money ", She thanked me greatly, i was hoping a tip but oh well. .

Makes you feel good, Vus making my game better.

It's really nice to see all the kind things people have done for people they don't even know. I always remember the kind things random people have done for me too, it's important to remember that those kinds of people are still out there! When someone random does something kind for me it really makes my day. Keep it up guys =)

I've sent out our first gift to a story that especially inspired me.

I don't want this to become a contest about getting a free gift from compLexity, however.

Don't lie and make up stories in hopes of getting something. That completely defeats the purpose of RAK.

Let's hit the streets and see what nice things we can do in January! Best of luck!
