Fro's App World #4

Posted by: aMies

Fro's App World is an article series about applications on the new iPhone platform. Many observers have hailed the applications as formally introducing the world of gaming to the world of handheld smartphones. What applications are good and what are junk? Fro is here to tell you. As always, the opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Los Angeles compLexity or its parent companies. Apple, iPhone and iTouch are trademarks of Apple, Inc., and we are in no way associated with the company.

Fro's App World #3

By: Andy "fro" Popkin

So I have started back at college, and I am so glad that I have an iPhone to bring with me to all my classes. I wanted one real bad last semester, but it was worth the wait. * 3G is better ;) * Anyway, this edition of Fro’s App World will be all about what you can do with your iPhone at and or for school. *** Remember that when I say iPhone, that includes iPod Touch on 2.0+ software ***

iHome iP99

Price: $149

iHome iP99
First thing you can do is get yourself an iPhone/iPod speaker/clock thing like I just got yesterday as a birthday present from my awesome girlfriend. She got me the iHome iP99 and so far I am really diggin it. It has pretty good sound out of the box, real easy to use, and looks nice. Only a few bad things that I can see so far. No speakerphone basically, and no iPhone 3G dock insert. I have not used the alarms yet, but I do know you can have a wake up play list where the clock can randomly pick a song from the play list to wake you up! The school connection here is so your not late or missing your ever important and way to f*cking early 8:00am class. The iP99 is also a little pricy, but seems to be worth it @ $149.

Fro Picks:

Pros:
- Great room filling sound
- Looks good anywhere
- Charges iPhone/iPod
- Works with all mp3 players (iP99 comes with line-in input)
- 8 Dimming levels so your clock won’t keep you awake

Cons:
- Cant really use as speaker phone
- Slightly expensive

iProcrastinate/Tasks

Price: Free

iProcrastinate/Tasks
So now that you awake and pumped up to go to that 8:00am class (riggghhttt), you can use the app called iProcrastinate Mobile (Tasks). This program is pretty nice; it keeps track of your classes and what you need to do. I am sure there are better programs to do this, but this was free so I checked it out. (If anyone knows of another free one please tell me) This app helps me remember what the room number is of my class, the time, what class it is, etc... which I really like. As of now I can only say that the app is lacking the ability to have a custom due date, and that is its only downside.

Fro Picks:

Pros:
- Good way to keep track of your classes
- Your “To Do list” is always with you
- Keeps you from missing tests

Cons:
- No custom due dates/dates

The final part of my article this week is going to cover stuff to do on your iPhone to keep you awake and focused in class. By being focused I mean playing games, watching videos, and maybe exercising your brain. While I am in class I like to do things to keep me busy while the professor is not really teaching anything. This is when I open up SudokuFree, one of the many free Sudoku apps for the iPhone. Playing this game somehow keeps me interested in my classes. When I get stuck in sudoku I open up Diggerific and do some news browsing. Diggerific is the only Digg app that I have tried but I love it. The websites open in the app so you don’t have to go to Safari and start all over with Diggerific. There is always Facebook, AIM, and what ever socializing program you want to use. Papijump is quite possibly the best free game I have found yet. BlackJack Run Lite is also very fun. It is just like Turbo 21 on Pogo.com. Labyrinth LE, reMovem free, CarriesDots, Morocco, PegJump. Just search the names in the App Store and they will come up. All of these are free games and or applications and are very fun to use as a time waster during your 8:00am class. I could have done a review on all of these games, but they are all 5 “pick” games with few or no cons. Trust me, you don’t need a bunch of BS writing to tell you these are good fun games.

Another thing I did today that doesn’t really have to do with school is I made my own ringtones for free! It took a few mintues and im sure there are programs that do it faster but this worked just fine. Goto eHow and follow those instructions.

With all of these apps and games, I hope you can find a way to enjoy your classes. But remember if your teacher asks what you’re doing; always keep a website pertinent to your class open in Safari ;)

Now, back to playing with my iPhone! PEACE!!!

I hope you can answer this question, with the iHome IP99, can you receive phone calls and texts when it is on the dock? A lot of them you can't and you have to put it on Airplane mode to do so.

I believe the IP99 is shielded so you can leave your phone on, but Fro will need to answer. I'm also checking into the iLuv and Luna X2 (both of which come out this month).

Yes you can receive calls and text when the iPhone is docked. When you dock your phone, a pop-up will say that iPhone is not compatible (although it is). It asks if you would like to turn on Airplane mode, but if you just say NO then it all works fine. Ive still got some testing to do, but so far its a damn good iPhone/iPod dock/clock
